Anti-acne

The sebaceous gland is one of several glands in the skin usually associated with hair follicles. It produces and secretes sebum through the breakdown of the entire sebaceous cell by lysosomal enzymes.

The sebum is a greasy secretion that lubricates the skin and assists with water retention to prevent dryness. The relatively large glands are present in the face area, where they join to the hair canal at a depth of approximately 0.5 mm below the skin surface. The renewal rate of average-size sebaceous lobules in humans is between 21 and 25 days.

Acne can result from three typical disorders in sebaceous gland functionality:

  • overproduction of sebum,
  • the proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria,
  • abnormal desquamation of the sebaceous follicle epithelium, leading to a clogged pore.

Anti-acne ingredients act against those conditions, so they can be relatively classified by functionality into three to four groups:
  • sebum-regulating or sebostatic,
  • antibacterial or antiseptics that eliminate Propionibacterium acnes,
  • exfoliants against abnormal desquamation,
  • unclogging ingredients (including exfoliants) such as some enzymes, vitamins, and solubilizers.

Hexacarboxymethyl Dipeptide-12 is a peptide derivative that acts as a direct activator of Sirtuin1 (SIRT1). SIRT1 is an NAD+-dependent deacetylase enzyme that regulates cellular metabolism, survival, and lifespan. It deacetylates the target protein FoxO1, initiating cell autophagy.
