Peat Extract is a general term for various natural extracts derived from different types of peat. Peats and their extracts have been used externally in traditional medicine and successfully used for distinct clinical indications.
The value of peat has long been recognized. It is widely used in conventional baths to cleanse, soothe, and invigorate the skin. Nowadays, various peat baths and peat masks constitute a substantial part of the spa culture in northern countries.
These typically involve handling large amounts of dark-colored raw peat and often result in undesired contamination of clothing and facilities. Peat Extract is an ingredient from peat containing highly concentrated bioactive compounds and a pleasant light color, high in minerals and trace elements.
Thanks to Supercritical CO2 extraction, Peat Extract consists of skin-beneficial natural lipids, including long-chain alcohols, wax esters of long-chain alcohols and long-chain fatty acids, and plant sterols. It is a highly concentrated mixture of skin essential lipids. The significant sterols are sitosterol, campesterol, sitostanol, stigmasterol, cycloartenol, and 24-methylene cycloartenol. In clinical studies conducted in independent research units, Peat Extract demonstrated significant skin moisturizing and anti-wrinkle properties. It not only concentrates the skin-active compounds of peat but also possesses a light, milky color, offering a cosmetic formulator a unique antiaging ingredient of superior activity and aesthetic appearance.
Other studies with Peat Extract, derived by alcohol extraction, showed that topical application was effective against bacteria associated with burn infections, demonstrating its antibacterial properties. Another study revealed antioxidative, smoothing, and regeneration-promoting actions of the Peat Extract (from Jeonnam Jangheung), while confirming its antibacterial effect.
