Lentinus Edodes Extract is derived from the Shiitake medicinal edible mushroom and has well-studied, proven therapeutic properties. It has antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, antiviral, and regenerative effects.

Shiitake is native to Japan, China, Korea, and temperate parts of Asia. Japanese mushrooms have been prized in Oriental medicine for at least two thousand years. It has been used as a flavorful food and as a treatment for infections, inflammatory, systemic conditions, and aging-related issues. Shiitake has long been taken as a tonic to increase energy, extend longevity, and promote overall health and vitality.

Shiitake is a rich source of lentinan, ergothioneine, eritadenine, lectins, and many vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, fiber, and nucleic acid derivatives. Studies have shown that Lentinus Edodes extract can boost the immune system, inhibit the enzymes collagenase and elastase (MMPs responsible for collagen and elastin degradation), increase type I procollagen production, and protect dermal cells from oxidative damage, exhibiting potent anti-aging, firming, smoothing, and revitalizing effects upon topical application.

Lentinus Edodes Extract contains the sterol ergosterol, which can be converted by sunlight into vitamin D. Much of the research on shiitake has focused on its polysaccharides, especially lentinan, a 1,6;1,3-beta-glucan that relieves UV-induced fibroblast senescence and has shown potential to reduce skin photoaging.

Lentinus Edodes Extract is a safe, effective, and eco-friendly ingredient for personal care applications. However, it is a known allergen, and many cases have been reported of contact dermatitis and work-related asthmatic conditions.

Note: Oral consumption of raw Shiitake (Lentinus Edodes) is "famously" associated with "Flagellate Dermatitis", a systemic intoxication reaction causing distinctive whip-like cutaneous lesions.
