The Bay laurel (Laurus Nobilis) is a shrub that was a symbol of glory and reward. It has been used throughout history for various purposes, including extensive use as a flavoring in foods and as an aromatic in perfumes. Its volatile oils' bactericidal and fungicidal properties traditionally have been used in anti-dandruff hair products.
For centuries, a paste of bay laurel was applied topically as a remedy for colds and chest ailments. Internally, its preparations have been used to treat diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disorders. Bay laurel oil, pressed from the berries and leaves, has long been used as an ingredient in salves and liniments for relieving rheumatism, bruises, skin rashes, and aches and pains of strained muscles. American Indians used the leaves to repel fleas and other biting insects.
Laurus Nobilis Leaf Extract is a light to medium amber liquid with a characteristic odor. It is rich in various polyphenolic compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, and lignans, with notable antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-tumorogenic activity. It is used in hair products as an aromatic and anti-dandruff agent. Thanks to its antimicrobial properties, it is also used in oral care applications.
Due to its wound healing, antiseptic, diaphoretic, and astringent properties, Laurus Nobilis Leaf Extract is also used in topical skin preparations and ointments. In addition, it can act as an insect repellent, an anti-inflammatory, and, in higher concentrations, an analgesic. It is soothing when used in bath and apres-bath products.
