Passiflora Incarnata Flower Extract

Passiflora Incarnata Flower Extract is a light-to-medium amber liquid with a characteristic odor. It is rich in flavonoids like apigenin and benzoflavone, alkaloids, coumarins, maltol, phytosterols, and glycosides.

Passionflower (Passiflora Incarnata) is reportedly an aphrodisiac, although the name itself is not derived from that reputation. It was named in the 17th century by Jesuit priests and explorers from Spain and Italy, who claimed to see crucifixion symbols in the plant's blossoms.

The plant has been reported to have analgesic properties. Passiflora Incarnata has long been used as a calmative and to treat tension, fatigue, insomnia, restlessness, hysteria, headaches, epilepsy, and hyperactivity in children.

The American Indians used the leaves in a poultice to treat bruises and drank them as a tea to soothe their nerves. Since the late 19th century, herbalists have noted its sedative and pain-relieving properties, and the crushed plant tops have been used to treat burns and skin eruptions.

Incorporated in modern skin care applications, Passiflora Incarnata Flower Extract acts as a moisturizer and antioxidant that soothes and softens the skin, especially effective for sensitive skin. In addition, it enhances skin barrier function, reducing transdermal moisture loss and improving protection against environmental damaging factors.

Passionflower extract is used in skin care creams and lotions. Its soothing qualities are particularly useful in bath products. Multiple in vivo tests and clinical trials showed that it is a safe, non-toxic, and effective ingredient for personal care applications.
