Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate

Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate is a structurally modified BHT. This highly efficient phenolic antioxidant does not exhibit the drawbacks associated with BHT (high volatility and photo-oxidative yellowing) and is helpful for product protection and stabilization.

Historically, the rationale for replacing BHT with structurally modified derivatives was first applied to polymer additives. The old designation of this ingredient was Tetradibutyl Pentaerythrityl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate.

Due to the increased molecular weight (1178 vs. 220), Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate exhibits a much lower volatility when compared with BHT. Moreover, yellowing is strongly reduced since no stilbenquinones are formed during photo-oxidation compared to BHT.

In summary, BHT derivatives such as Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate are non-discoloring antioxidants for the long-term stabilization of home and personal care products. This ingredient's solubility characteristics are very similar to those of BHT (oil-soluble), and it is used for direct replacement.

Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate is incorporated into many cosmetic and toiletry formulations. The main applications of this antioxidant are cleansing compositions, e.g., bar/liquid soaps and other rinse-off formulations. Moreover, it can also be used as a stabilizer to replace BHT in skin care products and fragrance formulations.
