Medicago Sativa Leaf Extract

Medicago Sativa Leaf Extract is a light-to-medium amber liquid with a characteristic odor, with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cleansing properties. It contains saponins that form a soapy foam when dissolved in water and are used as a detergent.

Discovered by the Arabs, Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is one of the first medicinal herbs, often called the "father of all foods." It has recently been rediscovered for its valuable nutritional properties.

Medicago Sativa is a good source of minerals, proteins, and vitamins. On an industrial scale, Alfalfa is a perfect natural source of chlorophyll and carotene.

Alfalfa extracts are used in unbaked food, beverages, candy, frozen desserts, gelatins, liqueurs, meat products, and puddings. In addition to enhancing the organoleptic properties of food, these extracts exhibit antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, protecting products from spoilage.

Medicago Sativa Leaf Extract showed promising results in a study for the treatment of depigmentation disorders, such as vitiligo. It improved the pigmentation of skin and hair when combined with low-dose UVA exposure. It is also considered a bactericide, an estrogenic, a stimulant, and a tonic.

The ethanol extract of Medicago sativa has been tested for antibacterial properties, including for anti-acne applications, and has shown promising results. Researchers suggested it as a safe, natural ingredient for anti-acne applications and products against other dermal infections. Another study reported its phytoestrogenic activity, suggesting topical application for unwanted hair.

Medicago Sativa Leaf extract is a safe ingredient for personal care applications, non-toxic to skin fibroblasts and keratinocytes. It is used in skin care toners, astringents, lotions, moisturizers, and facial cleansing products.
