Epilobium Angustifolium Extract

Epilobium Angustifolium Extract is a natural ingredient derived from Canadian Willowherb (also called Fireweed). Historically, preparations from Canadian Willowherb have been used for wound healing and as an anti-inflammatory and soothing remedy for burns and insect bites.

Scientifically, Epilobium Angustifolium Extract has been demonstrated to have anti-irritant, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties, thus confirming ample ethnobotanical and anecdotal evidence. It inhibits the activity of collagenase and hyaluronidase, enzymes responsible for degrading extracellular matrix (ECM) components, and exhibits smoothing, hydrating, and anti-aging properties.

Moreover, the significant components of Epilobium Angustifolium Extract have been identified, and primary active components have been isolated, including proanthocyanidin, Ellagitannin, ellagic acid, and gallic acid. The efficacy of these compounds meets or exceeds that of pure chemical standards, without the cost or stability issues often associated with these materials.

Antimicrobial components of Epilobium Angustifolium Extract protect skin from various infections while modifying the lipid profile and preventing pathogen adhesion. In addition, multiple studies demonstrated its ability to diminish UV-induced fibroblast senescence and to exert a photoprotective effect. Another interesting study demonstrates the effectiveness of penetration antioxidants and other beneficial components of the extract when delivered via bacterial cellulose membranes.

Epilobium Angustifolium Extract is a safe, effective, multi-functional, natural ingredient for various personal care applications. It is an excellent botanical active against skin irritation, environmental stressors, infections, and premature aging.

Biologically Active Phytochemicals in Epilobium Angustifolium Extract

  • Proanthocyanidin is a potent antioxidant and capillary strengthener. Thanks to its Elastase inhibitory activity, it preserves skin elasticity and smoothness.
  • Ellagitannin exhibits antimicrobial and antiviral properties. It also acts as an inhibitor of 5α-Reductase, preventing hair loss and alopecia.
  • Ellagic acid induces cellular detoxification enzymes, thereby activating antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic cascades in dermal cells.
  • Gallic acid is an anti-irritant with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
  • 3-O-glycosides of quercetin and kaempferolquercetin also exhibit antioxidant and anti-irritant properties.
  • Glycan is an emollient with soothing action.
