Chelating agents are often combined with phenolic AOs to complex heavy metal ions, resulting in synergistic antioxidant mixtures that impart stabilizing properties to products. The most prominent chelant is Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid (EDTA and its direct derivatives), though this product exhibits very low biodegradability.

S-ethylene diamine disuccinic acid (S, S-EDDS) was later introduced as a high-performance, fully biodegradable substitute for EDTA. It is a structural isomer of EDTA, is found in nature, and can be obtained by fermentation.

Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate is the trisodium salt of S, S-EDDS. It is highly soluble in water, and aqueous concentrates are very convenient for incorporating the chelant into the water phase of cosmetic and toiletry formulations.

Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate is a fully biodegradable chelant with the performance of EDTA and its derivatives. It is used in many products with antioxidants and other chelating agents as part of a complex stabilizing system.
