Kappaphycus Alvarezii Extract (Eucheuma cottonii or Elkhorn sea moss extract) is a natural marine extract rich in different types of carrageenan polysaccharides, used in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. It mostly contains kappa-carrageenan, but also retains other sulfate group-containing, high-molecular-weight iota- and lambda-carrageenans, small amounts of proteins, lipids, polyphenolic compounds, and minerals.
Kappaphycus alvarezii, also known as Elkhorn sea moss, is a red alga. This seaweed is rich in carrageenans - natural linear sulfated polysaccharides, with excellent thickening, gel-forming, and film-forming (after application) properties. In addition, it exhibits noticeable antibacterial properties against many harmful bacteria (mostly Gram-positive), antiviral, immunomodulatory, and anticancer effects.
Carrageenan forms a veil on the skin surface, reducing transdermal water loss and desquamation. Even with the first application of a formulation containing Elkhorn sea moss extract, it smooths fine lines, furrows, and deep wrinkles, revealing a lifted, fine, and supple surface. It contains natural antioxidants that protect skin from UV-induced damage and oxidative stress.
Kappaphycus alvarezii extract may form a hydrogel with a glycosaminoglycan-like (GAG-like) structure, similar to the skin extracellular matrix, that accelerates wound healing, promotes moisture retention, and reduces inflammation or irritation. It is a safe, well-studied, and eco-friendly (relatively low environmental impact at high concentrations) cosmetic ingredient derived from natural, renewable raw materials.
