Algin (Sodium Alginate) is a polymer from brown seaweeds (Laminaria,  Macrocystis,  Ascophyllum nodosum,  Sargassum,  Ecklonia,  Lessonia, Durvillaea, etc.) that forms heat-irreversible gels in the presence of calcium ions. This ingredient is recommended for products that require non-melting gel or film-forming applications.

Depending on the seaweed botanical source, the guluronic/mannuronic acid ratio influences the characteristics of the irreversible algin-produced gels.
