Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate is one of the aluminum chlorohydrates with a general formula Al4Cl3(OH)9 that diffuses into and physically blocks sweat gland ducts and is used in antiperspirants, deodorants, and after-shave applications as a cosmetic astringent. It is also used in anhydrous suspension aerosols as an impalpable powder.
Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate is an off-white to slightly yellow crystal or fine powder with a characteristic odor that readily absorbs moisture. It is used in hydro-alcoholic roll-ons, pump sprays, and other antiperspirant formulations, providing customer discretion.
Several clinical studies have shown that Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate at a concentration of 20% or its blend with other aluminum salts (e.g., aluminum chloride) is promising for the treatment of axillary and palmar hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). It was well tolerated, with no or minimal adverse effects, such as itching.
Aluminum sesquichlorohydrate-containing antiperspirants and other personal care products are not recommended for patients with kidney disorders, due to the risk of accumulation in the body and short- and long-term adverse effects, such as neurotoxicity, microcytic anemia, abnormal muscle tremor, etc.In addition, Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate can slowly corrode some metals used in costume jewelry, including iron, brass, copper, aluminum, and mild steel.
